FE Report
Prices of re-chargeable fan and lights and wax candles have soared by around 30 per cent following rise in demand that has triggered by seemingly unending load-shedding.
Abu Hazrat Rana, managing director of Padma Electric World told FE, "The prices of rechargeable light and fan increased by Tk 150 to Tk 300 within last 15 days and is still on the rise."
"Because of acute scarcity of power, demand and sale of rechargeable light and fan doubled as we are suffering from load-shedding every two hours," he said.
He said: "Mainly Chinese fans and lights -- Sunca, Feetat, Germain, Defender, Camping light, Noha -- are popular. Rechargeable fans costs between 1800 and Tk 3200 while costs of fans varies around Tk 700 to Tk 1200."
A Mannan, owner of Maria Electronics said, "The prices of these electronic items mainly increased following rise in demand and windfall profits earned by importers."
"But people are compelled to buy these items and that's why our sales doubled. We are selling 10 to 15 pieces of rechargeable fan-light regularly."
Shilpi Akhtar, a customer said, "The prices of fans and lights have gone up but the misery due to scarcity of power is higher. I am scared that salesman told me to charge my combined fan and light for 18 hours uninterruptedly but how it could be possible! I don't know."
"I am thinking that I should go for candles and hand fans as an alternative in the severe load shedding. But the quality of hand fans and candles declined."
Candle wholesaler Osman Goni said, "Only one month before I sold per dozen candles at Tk 30 to Tk 35 but now I am selling it for Tk 40."
"The sale of candles rose because of shortage of power supply and each sack of candle making material increased from Tk 2000 to Tk 2800."
He said, "In this period I sold 80 dozens of candle every day last year while this year I am selling 100 dozens of candles per day."
