Prices of rice, edible oil, baby food show upward trend

Prices of a number of essentials, including rice, non-brand edible oil and baby foods showed an upward trend in the city's retail markets during the past one week due to shortage in supply mainly caused by heavy monsoon rain and impact of fuel price hike on transportation, traders said Friday.

A number of traders in the city's different retail markets said prices of fine varieties of rice increased by Tk 2.0 per kg. Minicate was selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 per kg, which was Tk 40-Tk 42 and Nazirshail was selling at Tk 42 -Tk 44 per kg against Tk 38-Tk 40 one week ago.

Coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28, were selling at Tk 36-Tk 38 a kg although the rates were Tk34-Tk36 per kg in the previous week.

Traders at the wholesale level said Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1500-Tk 1550 per maund (37.300 kg) while the rate was Tk 1480-Tk 1490 a week ago.

Besides, the wholesalers said BR-28, widely consumed by low-income people, was selling at Tk 1350- Tk 1400 per maund against Tk 1280- Tk 1300. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1580 to Tk 1600 per maund compared to its previous rate of Tk 1417-Tk 1454.

On the other hand, prices of pilao rice which increased byTk15 stood at Tk 110 in the past one week at the city's retail shops.

In the same week, prices of canned edible oil of different brands of five litres ranged between Tk 600 and Tk 620, which were Tk 565 -Tk 570 a week ago.

Prices of non-brand soybean oil and super palm oil remaining unchanged at their previous prices were Tk 114 and Tk 120 per kg respectively at Karwan Bazaar and Naya Bazaar in the last week.

Traders said, prices of the finer variety of local lentil ranged between Tk 100 and Tk 110 against its previous rates at Tk 95-Tk 100 per kg a week ago. Prices of Nepalese and Turkish varieties of lentil were Tk 88-Tk 90 unchanged from the last week.

They, however, said prices of baby food of different brands might increase to some extent at the retail level this week.

In the last week, prices of Lactogen-ii (400 kilogram) of Nestle increased by Tk 20 to Tk 365. Fresh baby food, Dano and Serelac were selling at Tk 208 (400gm), Tk 225 (400gm) and Tk 270-Tk280 (400gm) respectively.

During the same period, prices of poultry birds went down and ranged between Tk 115 and Tk 125 per kg against Tk 130-Tk 150 per kg about two weeks ago.

In the past one week, traders said, prices of coarse flour which declined by Tk 1-Tk 2.0, were Tk 39-Tk 40 per kg against Tk 42 a week ago.

During the same period, they said, prices of local onion were Tk 25-Tk 26 per kg while the prices of the Indian one remained unchanged at Tk 15-Tk 16 per kg.

Prices of a number of fresh summer vegetables rose by Tk 2.0 to Tk 4.0 per kg due to supply disruption caused by monsoon rain.

Best quality snake gourd, cowpea, cucumber, green chilly and bitter gourd are now selling at Tk 20, Tk 18, Tk 15, Tk 20 and Tk 20 per kg respectively.

Price of potato was Tk 17-Tk 18 per kg remaining unchanged at its previous price a week ago.

In the retail market beef was selling at Tk 180-Tk 190 per kg and mutton was selling at Tk 260-Tk 270 per kg which was Tk 240-Tk 250 a week ago.
