Prices of rice in city markets show upward trend

Prices of different varieties of fine and coarse rice showed an upward trend in the city's retail markets during the last week while prices of poultry birds and onion came down significantly.
Besides, prices of vegetables came down slightly due to large supply of fresh winter vegetables to the retail markets in the city. Prices of other commodities including edible oil, lentil remained almost unchanged in the city's kitchen markets during the past week, traders said Friday.
A salesman of the city's Shantinagar rice market said prices of different fine and coarse varieties of rice increased by Tk 1 - 2 per kg at the city's retail level although the prices increased by at least Tk 50 - 70 per maund (37.300 kg) at the wholesale level.
In the retail markets, the minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 40- 44 per kg and nazirshail at Tk 36-Tk 44 per kg. Besides, coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28 and 29 and pari were selling at Tk 28 -30 per kg.
At the wholesale level, the minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1350- Tk1500 which was Tk1300-1450 per maund (37.300 kg) and the nazirshail variety at 1350 - 1500 which was Tk 1200- 1450 per maund, according to traders at the city's Babubazar and Nayabazar.
BR-28 was being sold between Tk 1200 and Tk1250 per maund which was Tk1100 and Tk 1250 per maund a few days ago while pari between Tk 1100 and Tk 1250 per maund, which was Tk 1050 and Tk 1250 per maund at the wholesale level.
Poultry birds were selling at Tk 100 -Tk 110 per kg at the retail level in the city. A dozen of eggs were selling between Tk 84 and Tk 90 on an average in the city's retail markets during the last week.
The market sources said prices of local onion declined by Tk 5 - 6 per kg while imported ones came down to Tk 2- 4 per kg due to huge supply of newly arrival onion at the retail level in the city.
Now, a kilo of local onion was selling between Tk 30 and Tk 32 per kg and imported Indian onion at Tk 26-Tk 28 which was Tk 28 to Tk 30 per kg a week ago in the city's retail markets. Garlic was selling between Tk 32 and Tk 34 per kg.
Prices of non-brand edible oil including soybean and super palm were selling between Tk 108-112 per kg and Tk 92- 95 per kg respectively at the retail level.
During the last week, prices of five-litre cans of edible oil of different brands were selling between Tk 550 to Tk 565 at the city's kitchen markets.
Traders said prices of local and imported lentil remained unchanged at their previous rates in the city markets. A kilogram of local lentil was selling at Tk 108-Tk 110 while imported lentil between Tk 88 and Tk 90.
Prices of vegetables came down by Tk 5- 8 per kg on an average at the city's retail markets, traders in the city said.
On Friday, a kilo of lady's finger was selling at Tk 28-32, brinjal at Tk 25-30, papaw Tk 9- 12 and a medium sized cauliflower at Tk 10-15, according to the traders in the city's retail markets.
Cucumber was being sold at Tk 20-24 per kg, tomato at Tk 40-45 per kg, beans 24- 28, radish Tk 15- 20, bitter gourd Tk 25-30 and potato Tk 18 per kg (old stock) and Tk 19 -Tk 20 (new arrivals). Green chilli was selling at Tk 40 - 50 per kg on an average at the city's kitchen markets.
In the retail market beef was selling at Tk 200- 220 per kg and mutton was selling at Tk 320- 340 per kg during the last week.
