Prices of rice, powder milk rise

Prices of rice and powder milk of some brands registered an upward trend at the retail level in the city markets over the last one week compared to their previous prices, market operators said.
During the last one week, they said, prices of most other essential commodities remained almost unchanged while prices of seasonal vegetables marked a declining trend.
At the wholesale level, market operators said, prices of rice have increased by Tk40-Tk50 per maund.
Talking to the FE Friday, wholesalers of rice in the city said prices of rice that recorded rise after hurricane SIDR hit the country also soared last week by Tk 1-Tk 2 on information that India would not sell the same to the private sector importers.
At the retail level, prices of coarse variety of rice ranged between Tk27 and Tk28 per kg while finer varieties of rice ranged between Tk36 and Tk42 per kg against their previous prices during the last one week, traders said.
During the same period, at the wholesale level, Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk1290-Tk1300 per maund (37.50-38 kg) against its previous rate at Tk1220-Tk1250 per maund about two weeks ago. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk1350-Tk1500 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 1250 per maund two months ago, BRRI at Tk 960 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 760 per maund and Lata variety of rice at Tk 955-Tk1000 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 850 per maund a month ago.
Market operators said prices of powder milk of some brands increased during the last one week.
They said price of a renowned company's powder milk was Tk493 per kg last week against its previous price at Tk468.
Prices of liquid and condensed milk of different brands that recorded a rise by Tk1-Tk2 per litre two weeks ago remained almost unchanged. Liquid milk of various brands was selling at Tk35-Tk42 per litre in the markets over the last week against their previous price at Tk36-Tk40 a month ago.
Traders said prices of onion have declined sharply as onion imported from India and China has flooded the market. Indian onion and Chinese onion were selling at Tk 25-Tk26 per kg and Tk27-Tk28 per kg respectively against their previous prices at Tk40-Tk45 per kg two weeks ago in the city markets.
During the last week prices of edible oil remained unchanged. At the retail level, prices of canned edible oil of different brands of five litres remained unchanged at Tk 450-Tk455.
During the last week at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk1110-Tk1120 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk1020-Tk1025 per maund a month ago.
Prices of many seasonal vegetables declined to some extent over the last one week in the city markets.
Prices of newly arrived potato came down to Tk28-Tk30 from Tk35-Tk40 per kg a week ago. Prices of potato (old) remained unchanged at Tk25-Tk30 per kg. Price of a small piece of cabbage or cauliflower was Tk 12-Tk15, traders said.
