Prices of rice rise further in market

Prices of rice and onion that recorded a significant hike in the country recently showed again a rising trend at the retail level in the city markets yesterday (Friday) because of hurricane SIDR that hit the country severely, market sources said.
However, prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged while prices of newly arrived vegetable items and fish varieties marked a slight decline at the retail level in the city markets over the past one-week, market sources said.
They said supply of some commodities including rice and onion is yet to be improved.
At the wholesale level, sources said, prices of rice varieties have increased by about Tk 25-Tk 30 per maund in the last few days of the week.
The price hike of rice at the wholesale level is likely to make an impact on retail prices.
Talking to the FE Friday, a wholesaler of rice in the city said prices of rice varieties are unlikely to come down soon as hurricane SIDR damaged Aman fields to some extent.
He, however, expressed the hope that the price would decline if arrangement for adequate supply could be made.
Rice traders at the city's Badamtali wholesale rice market told the FE They said the growers in many areas of the country started harvesting of Aman paddy but the process would be affected due to submersion of paddy fields as a result of yesterday's hurricane.
During the last week, at the wholesale level, Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1175-Tk1200 per maund (37.50-38 kg) against its previous rate at Tk 1080 per maund one month ago. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1500-Tk1550 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 1250 per maund, BRRI at Tk 855 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 760 per maund and Lata variety of rice at Tk 935-Tk1000 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 850 per maund.
At the retail level, prices of coarse variety of rice ranged between Tk25 and Tk26 and finer variety of rice ranged between Tk 32 and Tk41per kg, traders said.
Over the past week, at the retail level onion was selling at Tk 68-70 per kg compared with its previous rates at Tk60-62 in the week before and Tk 54-Tk55 per kg one month ago, traders said.
They said during the last week prices of edible oil remained unchanged.
At the retail level, prices of canned edible oil of different brands of five litres remained unchanged at Tk 450-Tk455.
During the last week at the wholesale level prices of sugar remained almost unchanged. At the wholesale level, sugar was selling at Tk 1065-Tk1090 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 1020-Tk1025 per maund a month ago.
At the retail level locally produced sugar was selling at Tk32-Tk33 per kg compared with its previous rate at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg last month. Brown sugar was selling at Tk35 per kg.
During the last week eggplant was selling at Tk 25-Tk35 per kg against its previous price at Tk36-Tk40 per kg. Prices of green chilli that recorded a significant rise was selling at Tk50-Tk55 per kg against its previous rate at Tk 100-Tk 120 per kg two weeks ago. Coriander leaf was selling at Tk150-Tk160 per kg last week.
Newly arrived potato was selling at Tk58-Tk60 per kg Friday. Prices of previous stocks of potato declined by Tk1-Tk2 from the previous week's prices at Tk22-Tk23. Prices of bitter gourd also declined by Tk5/6 from its previous rate at Tk 36-Tk 37 per kg. A small piece of cabbage or cauliflower was selling at Tk 15-Tk16. Bean was selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 per kg, traders said.
They said prices of some newly arrived seasonal vegetable items like red amaranth, cauliflower may increase again as many fields will damage due to gusty wind and heavy downpour.
Prices of fine variety of local lentil remained unchanged at Tk 76-Tk 80 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk70 per kg.
During the last week at the retail level prices of one kilogram (kg) of packed coarse flour was selling at Tk39-Tk40 against its previous price at Tk 35-Tk36 per kg two weeks ago.
In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and beef at Tk 180-Tk190 per kg. Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
However, prices of condensed milk of different brands recorded a rise by Tk1-Tk2 though liquid milk of various brands remained unchanged at Tk37-Tk42 in the markets over the last week.
