Prices of sugar, hilsha fish go up

Prices of hilsha fish, sugar witnessed an upward trend but vegetables including green chili declined in the city's retail markets during the last one week. On the other hand essential commodities including rice and edible oil remained stable.
A medium-sized hilsha was selling at Tk 800 - Tk 1000 against the previous price at Tk 800-Tk 1000 for a pair.
Shrimp was selling at Tk 400 - Tk 500 per kg which was at Tk 500- Tk 600 a week ago, market sources said.
Different sweet water fishes such as ruhi was selling at Tk 160-Tk 200, katla Tk 200-Tk 250 per kg and poya Tk 200 per kg, pangas Tk 90 - Tk 120 per kg. Other local fishes including puti, tengra, magur were selling at prices between Tk 200 to Tk 250 per kg on an average.
Besides, prices of potato remained steady and were selling at Tk 24 per kg.
Prices of ginger and garlic witnessed the same trend at the retail level. The local and imported Chinese varieties were selling at Tk 60 and Tk 40 per kg respectively. Similarly garlic was selling at Tk 50-Tk 75 per kg.
According to retail traders in the city's different rice markets, prices of fine varieties witnessed a downward trend by Tk 2- Tk 5 per kg.
'Minicate' was selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 while 'Nazirshail' was selling at Tk 35 against previous price of Tk 38 per kg on an average last week.
On the other hand coarse varieties of rice including BR-28 were selling at Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg, Pari Tk 23 and Swarna Tk 22- Tk 24 per kg on an average at the city's retail level.
Imported Indian onion was selling at Tk 24- Tk 26 per kg. But a kilo of local onion was selling at Tk 38 against the earlier price of Tk 34 per kg.
In the past week, prices of different brands and non-brand edible oils witnessed a downward trend.
Non-brand edible oil such as soybean and super palm oil was selling at Tk 80 and Tk 78 -Tk 80 respectively against the previous price of Tk 84- Tk 85 respectively on an average.
During the last week, prices of different brands of edible oil in five litre cans ranged between Tk 380 and Tk 400 against the previous price of Tk 400-Tk 412 on an average.
Traders said retail prices of local lentil remained steady in the city markets. On Friday, a kilo of local lentil sold at Tk 105-Tk 110. Imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties were selling Tk 85-Tk 90 per kg.
But non-brand sugar was up and was selling at Tk 40 per kg against the earlier price of Tk 38 per kg.
Market sources said both farm and local eggs were selling at Tk 30 for a foursome due to lack of supply.
Prices of poultry birds (farm chicken) were up by Tk 10 and was selling at Tk 120 per kg on an average. A kilogram of beef was priced at Tk 220-Tk 230 and mutton Tk 300- Tk 350 per kg on an average at the city's retail outlets.
The prices of various vegetables were down. The local sellers said vegetables' price might increase if there was heavy rainfall.
On Friday, some vegetables including lady's finger was selling at Tk 24, brinjal Tk 24-Tk 28, papaya Tk 20 and bitter gourd at TK 22-Tk 24 per kg.
