Prices of vegetables go up in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Sept 8: Prices of almost all vegetables have marked a sharp rise during last couple of weeks in different kitchen markets of Rangpur district, multiplying the sufferings of the middle and lower income group of people.
Traders have attributed the situation to scarce supply caused by massive damage of vegetable fields in different areas of the region during last few weeks due to heavy downpour and flood water.
Due to scanty supply the prices of vegetables have jumped by Tk 10 to 50 per kg in a couple of weeks, sources said.
Presently eggplant is selling at Tk 60 to 70 per kg against its previous price of Tk 40 to 50 earlier, green chilli is sold at Tk 150 to 160 per kg while it was 100 to 110, bitter gourd (Korolla) is selling at Tk 50 to 60 per kg while it was Tk 30 to 40.
Cucumber is being sold at Tk 40 to 60 per kg against its previous price Tk 20 to 30 earlier, radish at Tk 60 to 70, papaya at Tk 30, Okra at Tk 40 to 50.  Per kg parble (Potol) is sold at Tk 40 to 50, teasel gourd (Kakrol) is at Tk 40 to 50 while it was Tk 30 per kg. Gourd is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per piece while it was 25 to 30.
The local onion is selling at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg, while the imported onion at Tk 65. Imported garlic's price also increased by Tk 10 per kg and is selling a Tk 110 to Tk 120.  Besides price of all kinds spinach has also increased, causing much trouble to common people, sources added.
