FE Desk Report
Sufferings of the consumers have mounted as prices of green chilli and vegetables have marked a sharp rise in different kitchen markets of Rangpur and Tangail districts during the last one month.
Sellers, however, have attributed the situation to scanty supply in wholesale markets following massive damage to the chilli fields in different areas of the districts due to heavy downpour and flood water.
Our Rangpur Correspondent says : owing to scarce supply, at present the most essential spicy item is being sold at Tk 150 to Tk 160 per kg against its previous price of Tk 40 to Tk 50 per Kg one month before.
Sources alleged that production of green chilli is facing a serious setback in the district presently, as torrential rain and flood caused huge damage to the chilli fields.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur official sources, recent rainfall and flood have caused damage to different green chilli fields and many vegetable fields. For this reason prices of green chilli and many other vegetables have increased. The situation is expected to become normal soon, sources added.
Our Correspondent from Tangail adds: The prices of vegetables and green chilli have shot up in the district as flood water inundated crop fields and damaged rural roads.

During a recent visit at Park market, Battala market, Chhoy Ani market and Baby Stand market, it was found that prices of all kinds of vegetables were increased by Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg, traders' sources said.
The price of green chilli has gone up abnormally at the local kitchen market, one kg of the item being sold Tk 190 to Tk 200 at the different local market which was being sold before a few weeks ago at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg.
All varietes of vegetables prices have gone up--- cucumber, brinjal, papaya, kochu mukhi, ladies finger, arum, spinach increased by Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg compared to that of the previous market rate, sources said.
Wholesale traders of Park market Ahsan Ullah said due to scanty supply of vegetables and green chilli market prices have become high.
As prices of vegetables and green chilli have increased suddenly at the local market, middle and low income group of people are suffering a lot. They are facing problems to maintain family by their limited income, told school teacher Abdul Jabbar.
The main reason behind the increased prices of the vegetables is recent flood. As flood water damaged many vegetables field in the area and communication system at rural areas have been disrupted following damage of many local roads, supply of vegetables decreased about by fifty per cent and prices have shot up, sources said.
