Prices of vegetables, onion, edible oil, coarse varieties of rice increase

Prices of vegetables, onion, brand edible oils and coarse varieties of rice increased in the city's retail markets while other essential items remained almost unchanged after Eid-ul-Fitr.
A number of traders in the city's retail markets said a section of businessmen increased the price of vegetables and others commodities taking the advantage of shortfall in supply.
According to the traders, prices of a number of vegetables have increased by Tk 4 to Tk 6 per kg after the Eid. Per kg ladies' finger, brinjal, patal, long bean and bitter gourd were selling at Tk 32, Tk 40, Tk 28, Tk 28-Tk 30 and Tk 32-Tk 34 respectively against their previous rates of Tk 28, Tk 40, Tk 22, Tk 24-Tk 26 and Tk 28.
But price of green chilli recorded an upward trend at the city's retail markets and a kg of green chilli was selling between Tk 50 and Tk 60 per kg based on their quality, according to the city's Naya Bazar market. Tomato was selling at 100 per kg, said traders.
Cucumber and green banana were selling at Tk 40 per kg and Tk 20 (four pieces) remaining unchanged.
Potato was selling at Tk 18 per kg remaining unchanged from its prices a week ago.
Prices of onion increased by Tk 2-Tk 4 per kg and brand edible oils increased by Tk 10 for a five litre can last week in the retail level. Per can (5 litres) oils was selling at Tk 530-Tk540. Prices of non-brand edible oil remained almost unchanged in the city's retail markets. Loose edible oils including soybean oil and super palm oil, were selling at Tk 106-Tk 108 per kg and Tk 76-Tk 78 per kg respectively, traders said.
Prices of onion, both local and imported, recorded an upward trend in the city's retail markets during the past one week due to shortage in supply due to Eid vacation, traders of the city's different retail markets said.
During the same period, they said, local onion was selling between Tk 33 and Tk35 per kg against Tk 30 -Tk 32 per kg one week back. Prices of imported Indian onion was selling at Tk 28-Tk30 per kg against the previous rate of Tk 24-Tk26 per kg.
According to traders, coarse varieties of rice, especially BR-28 and pari, were selling at Tk 39-Tk 41 per kg and Tk 35-Tk 36 per kg against Tk 38-Tk 39 per kg and Tk 32-Tk 34 per kg in the previous week. minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 40-Tk 42 per kg and nazirshail at Tk 36-Tk 48 per kg.
At wholesale level, the minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1450 -Tk 1500 per maund (37.300 kg) and the nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1450-Tk 1650 per maund during the last week, remained unchanged at their previous rates.
Besides, price of BR-28, widely consumed by low-income people, was selling at Tk 1300-Tk 1320 per maund, remaining unchanged from the prices of the previous week at the wholesale level.
Traders said prices of the finer variety of local lentil and imported Nepalese and Turkish varieties remained unchanged at their previous rates in the local markets. Local lentil was selling at Tk 110 per kg while imported at Tk 90 per kg.
In the past one week, traders said prices of coarse flour remained unchanged at their previous rates of Tk 39-Tk 40 per kg.
Non-brand sugar was selling at Tk 36 per kg, unchanged at its previous rate.
According to the retailers, during the same period, poultry birds were selling between Tk 125-Tk130 per kg remaining unchanged at their previous rate. Per dozen egg (chicken) was being sold at Tk 72-Tk78.
Beef was selling between Tk 210 and Tk 220 per kg while mutton between Tk 280-Tk350 per kg.
