Prices of vegetables, spices up, fish, rice steady in city mkts

Prices of different vegetables, including brinjal and tomato, continued to rise while those of spices like garlic and ginger maintained their previous highs in the city markets last week.
Brinjal was selling at between Tk 36 and Tk 40 per kg Friday in the city's retail markets compared with its previous week's prices of Tk 30-Tk 36 per kg.
The retail price of tomato also jumped to Tk 24 per kg from the earlier price of Tk 20, while carrot was selling at Tk 28 per kg Friday against Tk 24 per kg just a week back, trading sources said.
They, however, attributed the price hikes of brinjal, tomato and carrot to declining trend in their supplies, caused due mainly to the off-seasonal shortfall.
Prices of other vegetates remained more or less steady in the city markets during the last week.
Prices of most of the spices, except for onion, also maintained their previous high rates in the city markets.
Ginger was still selling at Tk 90 to Tk 110 per kg while local and imported garlic were selling at Tk 110 -Tk 140, trading sources said.
The prices of both imported and local ginger were also ranging between Tk 100 and Tk 110 per kg at the retail levels.
Prices of different kinds of fish and chicken, which marked a upward trend a few weeks back primarily because of inadequate supplies, remained unchanged during the last week.
A medium-size local 'ruhi' fish was selling at between Tk 250 and Tk 350 per kg Friday while that of 'katla' was ranging between Tk 200 and Tk 300 per kg compared to their previous prices of Tk 200-Tk 250 and Tk 180-250 per kg respectively.
A medium-size local chicken was also selling at between Tk 180 and Tk 250 while the prices of beef and mutton were selling at Tk 240-250 and 350-Tk 360 per kg respectively at the retail levels.
Although the price of hilsa fish marked an unusual rise ahead of 'Pahela Baishakh', marked a significant fall again after the celebration of the Bengali new year.
Prices of both finer and coarse varieties of rice remained steady during the last week with minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 42 per kg and Nazirshail at Tk 40-Tk 46.
Course rice, including Pari, Swarna and IRRI, was selling at Tk 30 per kg, and BR-28 at Tk 35 per kg last week.
