SIRAJGANJ, Oct 16: Abnormal price hike of white paper is causing sufferings to the poor guardians of students in the northern districts, sources said.
While contacting different paper traders in Sirajganj, it was observed that price of white paper soared abnormally in the local markets since the announcement of the current budget.
One single rim of 500 sheets of Basundhara white paper is being sold at Tk 240 against Tk 180 earlier.
A 55-gram paper is being sold at Tk 285 in the markets against Tk 195 earlier.
Karnaphuli brand is being sold at Tk 255 against Tk 195 earlier. Prices of other essential papers have also increased.
Poor guardians of students are suffering because of unbridled price spiral of paper. They are unable to meet the demands of the students.
A white-paper trader of Sirajganj told this correspondent that they had to buy papers from Dhaka city at high rates.
Some unscrupulous traders create some artificial crises of papers at the time of examinations.
Meanwhile, dairy farms in three northern districts -- Sirajganj, Pabna and Bogra -- are in dire straits because of price hike of white bran, sources said.
According to the dairy farm association, white bran is an essential item as animal feed. Price of a 50-kg bag of white bran rose from Tk 355 to Tk 405 within three weeks. The sources said a 50 kg bag of white bran was sold at Tk 355 on October 1. But the price has already increased to Tk 405, the said.
The dairy farm association alleged that the prices of all other animal feed particularly used by dairy-farm owners have increased alarmingly.
Following an abnormal hike in prices of animal feed in the market, 60 per cent of dairy farms have been closed down in the districts.
Sources said more than 150 dairy farms situated in Sirajganj meet up the maximum demand of milk in the local markets.
The association apprehended that most of the dairy farms would be closed down if the price hike continued further. It appealed to the concerned ministry to take immediate steps to arrest the price hike of animal feed items particularly used in the dairy farms.
