Primary inquiries into 11 of 35 corrupt suspects, including Dhaka city mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, AL presidium members Tofail Ahmed and Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, and former caretaker government adviser Justice Fazlul Haque have been completed, reports UNB.
The other seven corrupt suspects against whom the primary inquiries have been done are former BNP state minister Major (retd) Kamrul Islam, former Finance Minister Saifur Rahman's son Shafiur Rahman Babu, former Awami League MP AKM Rahmatullah, former BRTC chairman Taimur Alam Khandaker, former Communications Secretary Rezaul Hayat, deputy secretary Shamsul Alam, and RAJUK's building inspector and CBA president Amir Khasru.
These 11 individuals are among 35 suspected corrupts whose names appeared on the fourth list published by the Anti-Corruption Commission on October 4.
"The primary inquiries into 11 of 35 individuals have been completed. Reports are being examined and the next step will be taken as per the Commission's own consideration," ACC director general (admin) Col Hanif Iqbal told a Commission's regular briefing.
Replying to a query, he said primary inquiries into the remaining 24 individuals of the list would be done in phases.
To a questioner, Hanif acknowledged that the investigation report of GATCO case has been submitted to the Commission, but refused to confirm the number of individuals recommended to be included in the charge sheet.
"It's right that the investigation report of the GATCO case has been submitted. The activity is under process. On completion of the process, legal activities will be undertaken," he said.
Asked to confirm the number of individuals as reported in the media, Hanif said it is not possible to state the specific number. "The investigation report is being scrutinized after which the real number will come out."
It has been reported in the media that the investigation officer submitted the report recommending inclusion of 18 more individuals in the charge sheets along with initially accused 13 taking the total to 31. Eight former ministers, including Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Motiur Rahman Nizami, and seven former secretaries are among the additional 18.
Asked those who have been recommended to be included in the charge sheet would be arrested, Hanif said, "Time will say how objective the number is. Arrest and prosecution are legal processes. It has to be done where necessary. It's not right to say in advance."
When insisted on the number of individuals recommended being included in the charge sheet, he said, "I'm not familiar with the number. I'm not familiar with the recommendation of the investigation report."
Asked when the charge sheet would be submitted, he said it is difficult to say.
About the reported transfer of officials from the headquarters to district offices, Hanif said the decision of transfer has been taken to bring dynamism into the Commission.
He said in place of 54 districts now there would be 22 'coordinated district offices' across the country and the manpower would have to be used properly to begin the activities of these offices.
The director general said ACC chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury would begin visiting southern part of the country, including Barisal division and Madaripur and Shariatpur districts for public relations and exchange of views with people.
