Prisoner dies in Khulna

An under trial prisoner of the district jail died at Khulna Medical College Hospital on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Shahidul Sheikh, 30, son of Sheikh Shafiuddin Choukidar of Botiaghata upazila. He was suffering from respiratory problem since long. Shahidul Sheikh was an accused in an arms case lodged with Dacope police station. Jail super SM Alam Khan said Shahidul fell seriously ill at around 6:45pm and was rushed to the hospital where he died at around 8:30pm. Shahidul was brought to the jail on December 10 from Dacope thana. - UNB Indian citizen held in Jessore An Indian national was arrested from Jessore airport area Sunday night by the members of the air force. The arrestee was identified as Tarok Mukharjee, son of Giruban Mukharjee of Ghorjala village in Uttar Chabbish Pargona district of India. Police said while Tarok was moving suspiciously in the airport area at dead of night members of the air force challenged him. Later, they arrested him while he tried to flee the scene. He was handed over to Kotwali thana police. A case was filed. - UNB Huge phensidyl recovered in Khulna Police recovered 600 bottles of phensidyl from backside of Baratia Primary School of Chuknagar under Dumuria thana of Khulna district Sunday. On information, a team of police personnel led by Sub Inspector Rafiqul Islam raided the backside of Baratia Primary School and recovered six bags loaded with 600 bottles of phensidyl. Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders fled the scene leaving the goods behind. - Our Correspondent Indian liquor, hemp destroyed Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sunday destroyed 20,246 bottles of Indian liquor and 99 kgs of ganja seized from border areas here in last 10 months. BGB-8 battalion sources said the liquor and hemp worth Tk 37 million were seized in separate drives from February to November. The drugs were destroyed at the BGB-8 battalion ground in presence of Deputy Commissioner Yamin Chowdhury, battalion commander Lt Col Masudul Haque and local elite. - UNB One held with firearms in Magura Magura DB police in a raid here Sunday seized two sophisticated pistols, 34 bullets, four magazines and six packets of bomb making materials and arrested one youth for possessing the arms and ammunition. The arrested youth was identified as Rasheed Gazi, 25, son of Keramat Gazi of Khulna district. A team of the DB, led by acting police super Sazzadur Rahman, conducted the raid at Paranadhuali Bus station and arrested the youth from a bus. - BSS Paturia-Doulatdia ferry service resumes The ferry service on Paturia-Doulatdia route resumed Monday morning after nine hours of suspension due to dense fog. Ashraf Ullah Khan, manager of Aricha BIWTC office informed that ferry service on the route came to a halt at around 11:30 pm due to the poor visibility caused by the thick fog. BIWTC sources said Ro-Ro ferry Khan Jahan Ali, Shahjalal, Keramot Ali and K-type ferry Kumary from Paturia were compelled to anchor in the mid river due to the thick fog. - UNB
