Private firm seeks to import eggs from India

FE REPORT | Monday, 11 September 2023

A private company has sought permission to import 300 million pieces of egg from neighbouring India to help stabilise the soaring price of the item in the domestic market.
M/S Mim Enterprise sought the permission writing a letter to the Ministry of Commerce recently.
The private organisation made the appeal to the ministry in the wake of the recent surge in the prices of eggs in the local market.
A dozen of eggs are now sold at Tk145-Tk 150 in the local market, which earlier rose to Tk180-Tk190 per dozen.
A dozen of eggs were sold at Tk 125-Tk 130 several months back.
Nearly an average of 35 to 40 million eggs are sold in the country every day.
Some 23.37 billion eggs were produced in fiscal year 2022-23 across the country, according to the Department of Livestock Services.
Egg production remained at 23.35 billion in the previous fiscal year, the department added.
