Private university law to go to cabinet: Zillur

Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman announced Saturday that the proposed private university ordinance would be tabled in the next meeting of the interim cabinet, reports bdnews24.com.
Speaking at a press conference after a policy meeting at the education ministry, he also mentioned a committee would oversee the National University, as part of a series of short and mid-term education reform initiatives.
"Some 80 per cent of the responsibility for higher education in the country lies with the National University. So a high powered committee will be formed to increase its effectiveness," said the adviser.
He also spoke of planned reform of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.
"The directorate has sent a proposal to the ministry in this regard."
"There are a lot of problems regarding the governing bodies of the educational institutions," the adviser said.
"There is scope to review the legal framework in this regard. Work is going on giving highest priority to it. A working group is being formed," he said.
An education conference will be held in November, Hossain Zillur said. "Leaders of the political parties will take part in the conference"
The education adviser said, "The demand for education has gone up but the challenge of providing quality education has not yet been met. Short term solutions to the problem are also being considered."
He said existing policies regarding setting up of educational institutions, permission to teach, academic recognition and introducing additional subjects at secondary level would be reviewed.
In the meeting, educationists Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed and Prof Syed Manzoorul Islam demanded a permanent education commission.
The chairman of the latest education commission Prof Moniruzzaman Miah also supported the demand.
Education Secretary Momtazul Islam, Vice Chancellor of the National University Prof Mofakkharul Islam, Additional Education Secretary Mozammel Haque Khan and other educationists, officials of the education ministry and its offices were present.
