Friday, 27 February 2009

The prize-giving ceremony of Bangla Academy Shahitya Purashker-2008 was held at the Bangla Academy Thursday, reports UNB.

This year, Poet Mahbub Sadik received the prestigious award for his poetry, Prof Karunamoy Goshwami for his prose research and Helena Khan for literature for children.

Chairman of the Bangla Academy Prof Kabir Chowdhury presided over the award-giving ceremony. Director General of the Academy Syed Mohammad Shahed was present.

The Amar Ekushey Book Fair Thursday witnessed a very poor number of visitors as a tense situation was prevailing due to the rebellion at BDR headquarters in the city.

Some stalls and two of the three entrances to the Bangla Academy premises remained closed during the fair hours.

"It is difficult to bring any new titles due to the present situation in the city though we have several ready books," Masud Rana of Abasar Publications said.

Most publishers said the duration of the book fair should be extended by two or three more days because of this loss. Osman Goni of Agami Publishing House echoed the voices of other publishers.

The cultural function in the evening also drew a small crowd.
