Dhaka University (DU) teachers of the White Panel backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies on Sunday demanded unconditional release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia before the upcoming national elections.
They placed the demand at a sit-in programme at the Aparajeyo Bangla on the DU campus. White Panel convener Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam said there exists no democracy in the country; for instance, the government has enacted the Digital Security Act and passed the Broadcast Bill in order to abolish people's freedom of expression.
He also demanded resignation of the present government before the announcement of the election schedule and reconstitution of the Election Commission paving the way for holding the next parliament polls in a fair and credible manner.
