Tuesday, 30 November 2010
Four vehicles were torched and several cocktails were exploded allegedly by pro-hartal activists in various parts of the capital Monday, police said.
The activists set fire to a bus at Mirpur, a private car at Siddheswari, a taxicab at Elephant Road and a bus near Sonargaon Hotel in the capital while at least five cocktails were exploded on the Dhaka University campus between 6:00pm and 8:00pm.
However, no one was injured in the incidents.
Witnesses said the explosions took place in front of the vice-chancellor's residence, TSC premises, Raju sculpture and Shabagh intersection area.
Police blamed activists of the BNP for the violence, saying that they did it to create panic.
Officer-in-Charge of New Market Police Station said some youths came and set fire to a black taxicab at about 6:30pm and disappeared immediately after the incident.
"Firemen rushed to the spot and put out the blaze," the OC said, adding that they are yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incidents.
A senior DMP official said security has been stepped up in the city by deploying more riot policemen to avert any further trouble.
