Proceedings in graft case against Moudud stayed

Monday, 23 June 2008

The Supreme Court (SC) Sunday stayed for two weeks the proceedings of the trial court for charge framing in a case against detained ex-Law Minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information about it, reports UNB.

Vacation chamber court of Justice M Tafazzal Islam, following a petition filed on behalf of Moudud, passed the order of stay, as the petitioner preferred leave-to-appeal against the High Court (HC) judgment declaring valid the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) case against the BNP stalwart.

The case is now pending with a special court at the parliament building complex that deals with graft cases.

The special court earlier scheduled Monday for framing charge against Moudud, but it would now be stalled following the day's apex court order, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, a counsel for Moudud, told the news agency.

On September 16 last year, the ACC filed the graft case against Moudud with Gulshan Police Station.

The ACC accused Moudud of illegally amassing wealth worth Tk 73.8 million (7.38 crore) and concealing information about his actual assets. s
