Producing nutrient-rich snacks
Monday, 28 August 2023
Nutrient-rich food should be included in daily meals of children to ensure that they eat a balanced diet from a young age. Many young children nowadays prefer snacks and fast-food items over healthier options. Perhaps, food and beverage manufacturers should tap into this unexplored market and introduce healthier snack items for children. For example, Shakti Doi, a locally-produced yogurt, contains a high dose of micronutrients with vitamin A, zinc, iron and iodine which are very helpful for the growth of children.
Given their significant influence, our local companies must take opportunity to leverage the health and nutritional status of the young generation. Collaboration with nutrition experts is a key aspect for this endeavour. By consulting professionals in the field, the companies can ensure that the products they offer are well-balanced and provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and development. This partnership can lead to the formulation of food items with higher levels of fibre, protein, calcium, iron and other vital nutrients. Regulatory bodies can play a crucial role in ensuring transparency and accountability. Organisations should be held responsible when making unfounded nutritional claims. Regular evaluations of products can help prevent misleading information. Good health and nourishment of children is a shared responsibility of society including parents and food companies.
