KHULNA, Apr 11: The expected production has declined in Khalishpur (People's) Jute Mills within one month after its formal inauguration due to labour crisis for wages lower than other government mills. The production has fallen 34-35 tonnes from 70 of its target per day. Mills source said that the Khalishpur (People's) Jute Mills resumed on October -2010 with a production target of 70 tonnes jute goods. Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the production of Khalishpur Jute Mills after changing its original name People's Jute Mills on March 5. About 3600 workers started to work after formal inauguration. Though the mill is brought under BJMC the wages of workers did not change. A casual worker gets Tk 220 per day as wages in state owned jute mills under BJMC, whereas a worker of Khalishpur Jute mills gets Tk 165 per day, while an unskilled worker gets Tk 130 only. The recent sharp rise in prices of commodities has made living tough for the workers. So, the workers are compelled to search for other occupations. The number of workers has reduced due to wage discrimination. As a result the normal production is being hampered. On March 5 the name of the jute mill has been changed but the wages of workers did not. At present 2900 workers are working in the mill in place of 3700 and the production has fallen to 30-35 tonnes from 45-50 tonnes per day after trial basis inauguration. 10-day Jatra festival opens Another report adds: Opera industry can play an important role to create awareness among the people of the society.
