Production in Ashuganj fertiliser factory gaining momentum

BRAHMANBARIA, June 13: Production in Ashuganj Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited (AFCCL) is gaining momentum reaching the production target and meeting the dealers' demand properly.
AFCCL produced 3,82,878 tonnes of urea fertiliser against the target of 3,80,000 up to June 8 of the financial year 2009-2010. The rate of production reached 100.75 per cent of the target.
The company had produced 3,77,777 tonnes of urea fertiliser against the target of 375000 during the financial year 2008-2009.
About 4,15,705 tonnes of fertiliser were produced against the target of 4,01000 tonnes during the financial year 2007-2008.
AFCCL supplies fertiliser to five districts -- Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chandpur, Kishoreganj and Netrokona in its command area. The company has 684 dealers registered with Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) in the area.
AFCCL is also supplying fertiliser to another ten districts -- Jessore, Khulna, Kushtia, Bagerhat, Narail, Jhenidah, Meherpur, Magura, Chuadanga and Mymensingh now. These districts are out of the command area of the company.
The company pays the government revenue worth Tk 550 million every year.
The company has stored 67412 tonnes of fertiliser at the bulk godown having capacity of 40,000 tonnes, 17545.50 tonnes at the bag godown with capacity of 8000 tonnes and 10756 tonnes at the new godown which can preserve 7000 tonnes of fertiliser. The company has also kept 34850 tonnes of fertiliser under the open sky.
AFCCL has been suffering from manpower shortage with 278 officers and employees. Around 133 posts are still vacant.
Besides, AFCCL has insufficient computer, fax and photocopier machines for use in office. It has also inadequate vehicles for transporting its employees.
Local people urged the government to take necessary steps to run the company properly in the country's interest.
