KHULNA, Aug 18: Production has fallen by one-third in seven state run jute mills in Khulna and Jessore region due to crisis of raw jute. It is therefore uncertain whether the mill would be able to fulfil their production target in the current season.

BJMC recently allocated Tk 16.50 million to the mills for purchasing raw jute. However, the mills owe jute traders about Tk 460 million in arrears which is why they stopped supplying raw jute to the mills triggering the crisis.

Earlier the seven mills produced 268.67 metric tons of jute goods per day whereas at present they are producing only 109.60 metric tons per day due to shortage of raw jute.

Concerned sources said that the raw jute stock will last a little over a week. The production target for the current year was fixed at 8,10,583 quintals in the seven jute mills. But till today it has produced only 2,259.63 quintals.

Source said that of the Tk 16.50 million that BJMC has allocated for jute purchase, Tk 3.50 million is for Crescent Jute Mills, Tk 2.50 million for Star, Tk 2.0 million for Eastern, Tk 1.0 million for Alim and Tk 1.50 million for Carpeting.
