Prof Emeritus Dr Jamal Nazrul passes away

CHITTAGONG, Mar 16 (UNB): Physicist and cosmologist Professor Emeritus Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam passed away in a hospital in the port city early Saturday. He was 74. Family sources said that Dr Islam breathed his last at Chittagong Metropolitan Hospital at 2.00 am. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital two days ago. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. The first namaz-e-janaja of Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam will be held on the Chittagong University campus and the second one at Jamiatul Falah Mosque in the city. He was born on February 24, 1939, in Jhenidah. He studied at Chittagong Collegiate School, prior to receiving education at Lawrence College in Marit, West Pakistan where he passed the Senior Cambridge and Higher Senior Cambridge examinations. He also received BSc degree from Saint Xavier's College under the University of Calcutta. He later obtained BA and MA degrees from Trinity College, Cambridge. Islam did PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics from the University of Cambridge in 1968, followed by a DSc degree in 1982. He was awarded Gold Medal of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences for Physical Sciences (Senior Group) in 1985. Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Saturday expressed deep shock at the death of mathematical physicist and cosmologist Professor Emeritus Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam. In a condolence message, the PM said that the death of Dr Islam was a great loss to the country and for the world of science. She recalled Dr Islam's contributions to science and said this loss is irreparable. Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
