Prof Jahangir made VC of CUET

CHITTAGONG, Apr 15: Professor Md Jahangir Alam, an expert on earthquake, has joined today as vice chancellor of CUET.
The post of the administrative head of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology had been lying vacant since January 28 last when Professor Shyamol Kanti Biswas ended his tenure as VC of the university.
The teachers and students of the CUET launched a month-long protest programme urging the government to appoint a vice chancellor to remove administrative problems and create congenial academic atmosphere. They said the VC could be appointed from among the qualified and experienced teachers of the CUET.
The government appointed Professor Alam as VC for the next four years today at the order of Chancellor of the university President M Zillur Rahman. The appointment letter was faxed to the CUET.
Jahangir Alam was born in Mohammadpur village of Chandanaish Upazila of Chittagong district on November 30, 1960. He took the degree of Civil Engineering from Chittagong Engineering College (now CUET) in 1984 and joined the college as a teacher in the same year. His father late Manir Ahmed was a freedom fighter, a press release said.
He also studied in India, Macedonia, Thailand and some European countries. He had been working as professor of civil engineering of the CUET for the last 11 years and published 50 national and international research journals. His biography was placed in WHOs WHO in the World-2001, Outstanding People in the 21st Century and WHOs WHO in Asia-2006. He is considered one of the leading experts on earthquake in the country.
Teachers, students, officers and employees of the CUET expressed satisfaction to see Professor Alam as VC of their institution.
