Thursday, 10 July 2008

Eminent economist Prof Wahiduddin Mahmood has lauded the caretaker government's employment generation programme during the lean months with a call to make it a permanent measure to help the hardcore poor, reports UNB.

He was speaking at a daylong workshop on "100 Days of Employment Generation: Implementation and Challenges" in the city Wednesday.

Prof Wahid viewed the programme envisaged in the budget this year as a short run measure. He said the government should allocate adequate fund, and make it a permanent measure.

He asked the administration to ensure that the money allotted under the social safety net programme is not wasted. It should reach the genuine and targeted poorer section.

Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC), a think-tank, organised the workshop in collaboration with World Bank at LGED Bhaban. Agriculture Adviser Dr CS Karim and Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman also took part in the workshop.

DR Karim said the social safety-net programmme as envisaged this year is a courageous and innovative initiative. Some two million rural hardcore poor will be brought under the programme that will provide them with employment during the lean months.

He stressed the need for taking 'bottom up approach' to empower the rural poor, and emphasised public-private participation to make the programme a success.

Joint secretary of Finance Ministry A Khan in his keynote paper informed the workshop that objectives of the programme are to create jobs for the hardcore poor. They will be engaged in building rural infrastructures including roads, culverts, bazaars, and playgrounds etc.

He said the programme would run for 100 days during the lean period from mid-October to mid-January in areas where people are affected by river erosion and monga etc.
