Programmes to create awareness about women, children issues stressed

Speakers at a workshop in the city Thursday underscored the need for taking realistic programmes for creating mass awareness about women and children issues, reports BSS.

They also called for implementing the programmes in a coordinated manner, saying it should be ensured that the programmes are executed properly.

The Ministry of Information and UNICEF jointly arranged the programme "Central Workshop on Annual Workplan" under the project 'Advocacy and Communication for Children and Women' at Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) conference room.

Joint Secretary of the Information Ministry Faizur Rahman Chowdhury, who is also the National Project Director of the Project, was the chief guest at the function chaired by PIB Director General Nazrul Islam.

It was addressed, among others, by Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief of the Communication Section of UNICEF Christine Jaulmes, Director General of Department of Mass Communication Abdul Mannan and Director General of Department of Films and Publication (DFP) Quamrunnahar.

Faizur Rahman said the government is committed to ensuring the welfare of women and children and has taken different steps for their development in the greater interest of the nation and country.

Mentioning that 70 per cent population of our country are women and children, he urged all concerned of the project to work sincerely and in a coordinated manner by making them (women and children) aware so that they can enjoy their rights completely.

"All the programmes on women and children issues will be successful if the coordination between all stakeholders is proper," he said.

Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury said information is the essence of any venture and it is playing an important role in creating mass awareness about the issues of women and children in the society.

Praising the role of UNICEF in addressing the problems of women and children in the society, the BSS chief hoped that the UN body would continue their support to this end.

About 50 officials of eight departments and organizations under the Information Ministry joined the daylong workshop.

The Information Ministry with the financial assistance of UNICEF is implementing the five-year project 'Advocacy and Communication for Children and Women', official sources said, adding Tk 248.5 million project is scheduled to be completed in June, 2011.
