Project for development of Barisal river port to begin soon

BARISAL, Oct 31 (UNB): A Tk 180 million project will start soon for the development of the Barisal river port removing uncertainty over the implementation of the port development project since 1964.
According to the latest decision of the ECNEC the project was finally approved on October 14, this year.
A tender of Tk 30 million for construction of a modern terminal building at the port would be floated in the next month, official sources said.
The project would start after laying foundation by the Shipping Minister in the next month and will be ended on June 30, 2011 by changing the total scenario of the port including the standard of the service and modernisation of the facilities, said Zulhasuddin Ahmed, project director and superintending engineer of Barisal BIWTA.
The project includes construction of a three-storied modern terminal building on 1554 square metre land, 1500 square metre parking yard, 12 steel boundary and retaining wall, 714 metre walkway, 1000 square metre cargo shed, 400 square metre transit cargo shed, 120 feet long six pontoon with jetty for modern loading and unloading facilities, four steel gangway, passenger lounge and waiting room with health and sanitation facilities, development and maintenances of navigability by regular dredging and beautification of the terminal and adjacent areas of the port, the BIWTA officials informed.
