FE Report
The government has taken up a project to complete 51 unfinished bridges and culverts in 36 districts aiming to further develop the country's road network.
Communications ministry sources said construction of the bridges and culverts taken under five projects have remained halted since 2002. This will be completed at an escalated cost.
Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved the project cost at Tk 2.80 billion, which will be entirely borne by the government.
Sources said the works were halted for various reasons, including fund constraints, failure of the constructors and rise of construction costs. Some political reasons were also blamed for halting construction of the bridge and culverts.
These bridges and culverts are situated on three national highways and 11 regional roads in the country.
"This will ensure full use of the country's road network," said a senior official of the ministry.
The present government soon after coming to power took the initiative to complete the bridges under a project designed to ease road communication throughout the country, the official added.
However, another project is also underway under the ministry to replace the narrow bridges on highways.
