Project undertaken in N region to produce breeder potato seeds

NILPHAMARI, Jan 5: Alpha Agro Ltd has undertaken a huge project to produce breeder potato seeds, first of its kind by any private agro entrepreneur, in the country's northern region.
According to sources, Alpha Agro Ltd has planted saplings to produce around 300 tonnes of breeder potato seeds of three different varieties in Domar Upazila of the district.
When contacted, Debashis Chandra, head of research and development of Alpha Agro Ltd, said they will be able to provide one hundred per cent virus-free potato seeds as they are applying German technology for producing the same.
He said the technology will also help eliminate viruses like PVX, PVY, PVLR, etc.
He further said the company is using the tissue culture method to produce breeder potato seeds for the growers of the northern region, which will boost potato production in the region.
Potato has been selected as the 'one-district, one-product' exportable item for Nilphamari district by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
