Promoting GI goods, uplifting rural economy

Thursday, 6 June 2024

The primary concept of Geographical Indication (GI) is to confer special status upon products originating from specific regions or areas. Once granted, GI status enhances the reputation, market introduction, sales, and pricing of these products. In rural areas where job opportunities are scarce, residents often rely on local products for income. However, due to dependency, they struggle to fetch fair prices, especially when production exceeds demand, leading to price depreciation.
Promoting GI products can significantly benefit more people, considering the number of products acquiring GI status and the areas covered by it. Big cities typically lack a substantial number of products eligible for GI status due to their busy nature and diverse population, which prompts the establishment of offices and factories. Conversely, the potential for GI goods thrives in small towns and villages due to their inherent characteristics such as geographical relevance, local employment, skills sets, and historical significance.
In these rural areas, many individuals engage in traditional occupations passed down through generations, such as pottery, leatherwork, jute production, and handicrafts. The recognition provided by a GI tag validates their craft, indicating its uniqueness and excellence. These artisans are committed to their work and seek opportunities to showcase and market their products. Identifying potential GI products should consider factors like the socioeconomic status of producers, their historical association with the craft, and the need for alternatives to imported goods from third-world countries.
To facilitate this process, collaboration among various stakeholders is essential. Governments, organizations, media, social societies, educators, NGOs, and civil society must join hands, guided by a shared vision of fostering a peaceful economy. By working collectively, these entities can expedite the impact and success of initiatives aimed at promoting GI goods and uplifting rural economies.
