Proper policy support for packaging industry stressed

The export-oriented packaging and accessories (PA) industry could earn $12 billion by 2018 if proper policy support from the government was provided to the sector, said speakers at a seminar Saturday.
They said despite some limitations the PA sector has earned $ 185 million in 2008-2009 fiscal, they added.
Their observation came at a seminar on 'Contribution of Packaging and Accessories Industry to Export Earnings of Bangladesh: Analysis of the Problems and Concerted Efforts Towards its Development' at a hotel in the capital.

Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCCAMEA) organsied the seminar.
Commerce Minister Muhammad Faruk Khan was present as the chief guest in the seminar. Rafez Alam Chowdhury, president, BCCAMEA, delivered the address of welcome while Dr Mokbul Ahmed Khan, director of the organisation, presented the keynote paper.
Fakhrul Islam, chairman, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Executive Director Mostafizur Rahman, Tajul Islam MP and Shafiullah Chowdhury, newly elected president of Asian Packaging Federation (APF) were present as the special guests. Shahjada Mahmud Chowdhury, first vice president of BCCAMEA, gave vote of thanks.
The speakers said despite huge prospects the PA sector has been facing many difficulties that include lack of proper location, lack of smooth supply of power and gas and lack of adequate policy support from the government.
