Proper pricing of energy is the main barrier in ensuring energy efficiency in the country, experts opined Tuesday.
Ensuring proper price of fuels and controlling non-technical system loss are two main pillars of promoting energy efficiency.
Low energy prices create its high demand, while high prices keep the demand moderate, allow stable supply, and encourage energy efficiency, they said.
They said these while speaking on a roundtable titled "Energy Efficiency Roadmap", organised jointly by Energy and Power, a fortnightly magazine, and GTZ in the city.
"The government has taken an initiative to distribute 15 million CFL bulbs to boost energy efficiency," Industries Minister Dilip Barua said.
Alternatives such as renewable energy sources can never be promoted, if energy prices are not re-fixed according to market, he added.
"High price of energy is a must to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply," said Power Division secretary Abul Kalam Azad.
Petrobangla chairman Hussain Mansur also recommended gas price hike.
Bangladesh Power Development Board chairman Alamgir Kabir said, "We are producing 800-1,000 MW less electricity due to gas supply shortage."
Ijaz Hossain, professor of Chemical Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, presented the keynote paper on the occasion.
The country can be able to save 102 billion cubic feet gas annually, if it can ensure efficient use of electricity, the speakers said.
