The shipping ministry has sent a proposal for development of the Chittagong sea port to the cabinet division. The proposal will be placed before the cabinet next month, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan said. The minister told the FE Friday, "We have sent a proposal for the development of the Chittagong sea port. The proposal was made in the light of my recent visit to sea ports of Singapore, Dubai and Kenya." A high-level official team headed by the shipping minister visited Singapore, Dubai and Kenya in the middle of the last month. "The ports of these countries are highly developed in all respect. We have various shortcomings and we have to learn many things like port operation, management system, security etc," he said. He said, "The seven-point proposal includes increasing the number of board members to nine, construction of a 16-storied building in the port, major dredging, more training for the manpower of the port etc." The minister said, "We are waiting for the nod of the cabinet. After that we will start renovation of the Chittagong port, which will help ease the operation of the port." He said, "We have seen that the foreign port's boards comprise nine members whereas we operate the Chittagong port with four or five members. It is difficult to operate a mega port like Chittagong with a few people. At the same time for skill development of workers in the port we are planning to set up an institution." "We have a plan to fully digitise the Chittagong port operation. Already we have started digitising some systems. The total digitisation will smooth the activities of the port as the principal seaport of the country handling about 92 per cent of import-export trade of Bangladesh," he said further.
