Proposal for 'Garment Palli' at Bausia mooted
FE Report | Wednesday, 9 July 2008
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Finance for setting up an exclusive zone for apparel industry at Munshiganj at a cost of Tk 3.60 billion
"We have proposed to set up a 'Garment Palli' at Bausia in Munshiganj with all logistical supports like power, gas and water for making the RMG sector competitive in the global market," BGMEA President Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) told the FE Tuesday.
At least 542 plots will be developed on 300 acres of land at Bausia to rehabilitate city's all garment units there, he added.
Recently, the World Bank has also expressed its willingness to provide financial support to the project, he added.
"Our main objective to establish the garment village for garment industries is to survive in the highly competitive world market. It will help reduce the lead time and ensure backward linkage facilities," the BGMEA president said.
He said the space for each plot will be 15,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet.
"Around 1200 to 1300 garment factories are located in the capital city and we will accommodate only 300 garment factories that are more profitable and bigger than others," said BGMEA president.
Department for International Development (DFID) has already started studying the environmental and technical aspects of the project. It will take ten months to prepare a complete study report.
"We are hopeful that the village would be completed by 2010," said Mr. Parvez.
Bausia is situated just 37 kilometers south of Dhaka and home to some of the country's biggest garment factories.
"Some 16 backward linkage industries are directly involved with this sector. Banks, insurance, transport, hotels, shipping ports, real estate and some other service oriented organisations are also associated with this vital sector, which fetches the country much needed hard currency," he said.
"Some 2.0 million skilled and semi-skilled workers are now employed in apparel sector. The sector still needs six million more workers," the BGMEA chief said.
