Proposals to boost pharmaceuticals

Thursday, 7 January 2010

THE government should seriously scrutinise at least two of the proposals that were made a long-time back by the owners of the pharmaceutical industries. The suggestion for cash incentives to the export-oriented pharmaceutical industries, and for setting up a central testing laboratory, should be accepted by the government. Other export-oriented industries get the incentive. Why, then should the pharmaceutical industries, with immense export potentials, not enjoy it?
A government operated central testing laboratory for export-oriented pharmaceutical industries would be useful particularly for boosting the reputation of Bangladesh pharmaceutical products abroad. The lab would revive the deficiencies in quality certification.
The government should spare no effort in spotting export markets. Bangladesh missions abroad should be asked to be supportive. The pharmaceutical industry deserves allout promotional support from the government. The outdated patent law of 1933 calls for updating through amendment to facilitate export.
