Proposed deep sea port

Sunday, 20 June 2010

It was good to learn from your report on 10th. June, that the government is going for the first deep sea port in Bangladesh, based on the survey report on it. It is now confirmed that Sonadia in Cox's Bazar will be the major port in Bangladesh in the coming years. It will bring in greater economic activity in this southern-most district of Bangladesh which is very good news for the local people.
The estimated cost of investment will be Tk.14000 crore (140 billion)! Hopefully, it is expected that the first phase of the work will be completed by 2017, and to achieve this target, work must immediately be taken in hand. However there was no mention in your news report about the rail and road cmmunication link between Sonadia and the hinterland. The nearest road and rail link now starts from Chittagong, while the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar road is unfit for these loads and traffic frequency for the port. It is therefore urgently needed to build road and railway connection between Sonadia and Fouzdarhat, now the railway terminal for goods traffic; as well as the road transport hub.
I wonder when this work will start, and if the amount needed for this has been identified for budgetary allocation. To keep up with the time frame of 2017 for the port, earth-work for the road and railway tracks must start immediately after this rainy season.
Will you please inform the public through your pages, what plans and programmes have been taken up for this important work? Without this the deep sea port will not be functional!
