Prospect of diamond industry
Wednesday, 14 April 2010
THE government conducted a study in 1996 on the prospect of diamond cutting and polishing workshops/factories. A consulting firm was appointed, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to carry out the study. The consulting firm, SL Mandawat, in its study found great potentials of diamond manufacturing (cutting and polishing) in Bangladesh.
Investing only an amount of Tk 40 million (4.0 crore) or Taka 50 million (5.0 crore), an entrepreneur can easily establish a diamond manufacturing factory in a 3,000-sft floor premises.
As Bangladesh is a member of the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), there is no problem of importing rough diamond from abroad and exporting finished diamond (cut and polished) and diamond jewelry from Bangladesh. There is also a growing domestic market for diamond jewelry.
