Protect natural resources for national interest: CS Karim

RANGAMATI, Aug 24 (BSS): Adviser for Agriculture and Water Resources CS Karim has called for united efforts to protect the natural resources in the interest of the country.
"The resources are the Almighty's gift for His creatures", the adviser said while inaugurating a project on 'Consolidating Community Rights over Natural Recourses for Conservation of Environment and Sustainable Development (CCRNR)' in the district Saturday.
Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the ministries of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Forests and Environment Raja Debasish Roy was the special guest on the occasion.
Former deputy minister Moni Swapan Dewan presided over the function.
Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, Chairman of Rangamati Hill District Council Jagat Jyoti Chakma, Jan Mollar Hansen of the Danish Embassy in Bangladesh and Deputy Commissioner Nurul Amin also spoke on the occasion.
Referring to the colonial rule in this part of the world, the agriculture adviser said the foreign rulers recklessly used the resources here for their own interest ignoring the future of the people of this country.
"But we must make the best use of our own natural resources in a way that out posterity is benefited", he said calling for integrated efforts to protect and preserve nature's bounty at any cost.
He thanked DANIDA for funding the project in the CHT region and assured of all possible technical help for its smooth implementation.
The project is being implemented in 40 villages of six upazilas under Rangamati and Bandarban hill districts, officials said.
Later, the adviser along with others visited several areas and joined a views exchange meeting with officials and civil society leaders at the district auditorium.
