Protect rights of ethnic minorities: Hanna

Wednesday, 21 May 2014

Bangladesh has a rich culture with diverse communities from ethnic minorities and indigenous people but they often suffer as their rights are violated, said William Hanna, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Bangladesh, according to a news agency.
“We can’t separate human rights and cultural diversity. To protect their rights, the whole society must stand together,” he said while inaugurating a Human Rights Fair in Sylhet to celebrate the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
Hanna said media has been playing an important role in Sylhet in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable.
Human rights activist Sultana Kamal was present as the chief guest at the event organised by Oxfam, with funding from the European Union, said a media release.
Four journalists were honoured at the event for their courageous reporting on the rights of indigenous people.
The Human Rights Fair was organised under the project: Strengthening the voice of human rights defenders to protect the rights and entitlements of ethnic minorities.
