Protect water bodies

Monday, 24 June 2024

Desertification is spreading across much of the country. The Rajshahi region is one of the affected areas. The groundwater level is gradually falling. Even after installing tube wells at a depth of three to four hundred feet, water cannot be extracted.
Boro cultivation is being disrupted due to a lack of water from deep tube wells. The water supply to urban citizens is also being affected. All this is because of a lack of replacement of underground water.
According to recent reports, over three thousand ponds and water reservoirs have been filled in Rajshahi city in the last fifty years. Various structures have been built by both the government and individuals.
This issue is not limited to Rajshahi. Illegal occupation of water bodies is happening nationwide. It is hoped that necessary steps would be taken to address the problem and ensure proper implementation of the law to protect water bodies.
