Protecting the interests of Bangladeshi workers

Saturday, 27 October 2007

A number of unwelcome developments in Malaysia and some other countries concerning export of the Bangladeshi overseas workers have dimmed the prospects for finding new avenues of employment for Bangladeshis abroad. If the temporary ban on recruitment of the Bangladeshi workers is not withdrawn sooner than later by the Malaysian government, the remittance flow to the country may be adversely impacted. This impact will worsen further, if other countries take moves similar to that of Malaysia with regard to recruitment from the Bangladeshis. The authorities concerned do need to take effective and appropriate steps to help avert any such impact.
There is no denying that international migration has enabled millions of Bangladeshi workers to find better employment in other countries. The remittances by such workers have helped the economy by providing a big chunk of foreign financing. This has also enabled the country to cushion against some external shocks such as oil price increase. Indeed, workers' remittances are a good source of funds. If that source, in any way, is adversely affected that would have serious implications for the national economy which is already bearing the burnt of severe flood damage this year. Hence, the authorities concerned do need to take appropriate steps, well in time, to ensure that employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers do not shrink in overseas markets.
