Protecting youth from gambling

Tuesday, 19 May 2026

As the blessings of technology continue to permeate every layer of modern civilisation, a dangerous menace is simultaneously spreading behind the digital veil-online gambling and betting. What initially appears to be harmless entertainment is gradually turning into a silent addiction, particularly among the youth.
To protect young people from this invisible trap, law enforcement alone is not enough. A coordinated social movement is urgently needed. While the government must take strict action against illegal betting platforms and gambling apps, mass media and educational institutions should launch extensive awareness campaigns highlighting the devastating social, psychological, and financial consequences of online gambling.
Parents also have a vital role to play. They must remain attentive to their children's digital activities and maintain a friendly relationship with them so that young people do not seek escape in harmful activities out of loneliness, frustration, or depression. Encouraging participation in sports, cultural activities, and creative pursuits can help divert their attention from such destructive addictions.
