Students of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) staged a protest on Sunday, demanding justice in the attempted rape case of a female student as well as accountability from the university administration.
At around 10:00 am, the protesters locked the main gate and an inner entrance of the JU's new administrative building, causing disruption to administrative activities. The demonstrators also put locks on the proctor office as part of their protest programme.
The protesters placed a six-point demand, including immediate arrest and punishment of the accused, resignation of the proctorial body, strengthening campus security, recruitment of female security personnel, formation of a quick response team, and enactment and implementation of cyber security measures.
Fahmida Mun, a student of the 52nd batch of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, said, "Our first demand is that the perpetrator must be arrested within 48 hours. If the administration fails to do so, the proctorial body must resign."
She further said the lock on the registrar building would remain until the administration informed the students how long it would take to arrest the accused.
"We will continue our sit-in programme until the administration provides us with a clear assurance," she added.
