The students of the seven colleges - affiliated with the Dhaka University (DU) - again took to the street at Nilkhet intersection in the capital on Sunday, demanding to relax CGPA criteria and grant them chance to take improvement exams in three subjects for academic progression.
The agitated students brought out a procession from Suhrawardy Udyan and blocked Nilkhet intersection at 11:00 am to press home their demands.
Five of the students were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with illness. They were Shahriar Alam Apu (24) of Dhaka College, Takibur Rahman Bappi (24) of Kabi Nazrul College, Sonia Akhter (23) of Begum Badrunnessa College, and Mahfuz (24) and Rajib (22) of Bangla College.
Some protesters claimed that these students attempted to consume poison, but were prevented from doing so.
"Five students are being treated in the emergency department. Doctors are examining them to determine whether their condition is due to heat exposure or consumption of any substance," according to Bachchu Mia, officer in-charge of the hospital's police outpost.
Terrible gridlock occurred in several areas of the capital due to the blockade. Many roads in the areas including Shahbag, Science Lab, Azimpur, etc were closed. The students, however, stopped their programme until tomorrow (Tuesday).
The students of the seven DU-affiliated colleges had been protesting for the last three months. They claimed that they had not got result within three months. After attending almost half a year or more (in the new class), they got the result and could know that they were not promoted.
Taslim Chowdhury, a student of English department at Govt Titumir College, said, "We have been protesting over the last three months to press for a single demand. We have blocked road on several occasions. Despite repeated assurances, our demand has not been met."
"A few students have been hospitalised for consuming poison. If anything happens to them, coordinators of the seven colleges and DU authorities have to take the responsibility," he added.
