CHATTOGRAM, JULY 19: A tense situation prevailed in the port-city on Friday following agitated students' continued movement for quota reform in the government jobs and their sporadic clashes with police and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) cadres.
The students held 'gayebana janaza' of their fellow movement protesters, killed during the last few days, on the Laldighi ground after the jumaa prayer. At that time, the law-enforcers along with the BCL and Jubo League activists cordoned them off.
After the janaza, the students brought out a rally, which was foiled by the police attack. Some 25-30 persons were injured during the clashes at that time.
Later, the students brought out processions in different areas, including Gate number-2, Chawkbazar, Muradpur, Karnaphuli Bridge, Potia, etc. But, the law-enforcers along with the BCL-Jubo League activists resisted the processions and attacked the students when they tried to gather at any point.
Subsequently, the aggrieved students also threw brickbats and stones to the attackers. Sporadic clashes continued and a tense situation prevailed across the port-city until filling of the report at 8:30 pm. A large number of additional law-enforcers were deployed to thwart off any untoward situation.
On the other hand, a group of students blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Mirersarai, causing a gridlock in the evening. The police personnel cleared the road at around 8:00 pm.
