Candidates, whose appointment as assistant teachers in the government primary schools across Dhaka and Chattogram were cancelled by a High Court ruling, have once again taken to the streets to demand their reinstatement, reports bdnews24.com.
On Saturday, they gathered at Shahbag in the capital for the 10th day and announced a ‘grand rally’ today (Sunday).
"On Friday night, we protested in front of the Press Club. This morning, we resumed our sit-in for the 10th day. At night, we will stay at the Press Club," said Talukdar Piyash, a leader of the protesting candidates.
Piyash added that a ‘grand rally’ would take place at Shahbag on Sunday to protest the "police assault on female candidates" and to demand reinstatement.
"Our recruitment notice, written exams and interviews took place before the Supreme Court redefined the quota system. The government selected us based on recommendations from the law and public administration ministries. The High Court's ruling is discriminatory," said Mujibur Rahman, another protest leader.
Meanwhile, the government has appealed to the Appellate Division to suspend the High Court's decision, which annulled the recruitment of 6,500 teachers in government primary schools.
Deputy Attorney General Md Asad Uddin said the Directorate of Primary Education submitted the appeal on Thursday, with a hearing expected in the Supreme Court's Chamber Court on Sunday.
