PSKUP gains ground in Brahmanbaria

BRAHMANBARIA, Jan 24: Purbanchol Samannita Krishi Unnayan Prakalpa (PSKUP), an agriculture development project, has gained popularity due to its contribution to boosting agricultural production in the district.
The project has been working to meet the production targets of crops, flowers and hybrid vegetables in the country's eastern region since June, 2006.
The project, approved by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC), will continue its operation until June, 2009, the sources added. Through different programmes, it has been contributing a lot to improving life of the marginal farmers in the region and changing the country's socio-economic condition.
The PSKUP is run jointly by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) in eight districts - Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Habiganj and Moulvibazar.
PSKUP has so far arranged various training programmes on organic farming using modern technology, quality seed production and preservation, using agri-inputs like drum seeder and spray-machine and current crops cultivation for the farmers. To produce quality seeds, creating awareness about using modern technology and utilising the potentialities of varieties of crops in Brahmanbaria district. About 1750 farmers had been given training under the PSKUP project in the past.
The crops and vegetables being cultivated under the care of PSKUP are apple kul, papaya, IPSA bean, gourd, sweet gourd, chili, cucumber, sugarcane, (E-16), jute, seedless lemon, brinjal, oil-seed (T-6), black pepper, okra, turmeric, paddy (IRRI-50, BRRI-3, BRRI-23, BRRI-26), kakrol, kachu, tube rose flower, etc.
The PSKUP has already begun to display pictures of modern technology, quality seeds, seed production, fertiliser management, current crops, obsolete crops, integrated pest management (IPM), leaf colour chart (LCC), etc at its display centres in Brahmanbaria district.
PSKUP will completely be run at government expense. The exhibition plots in eight upazilas of Brahmanbaria district have been selected by the project and the show will continue until 2009.
