Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed Monday called upon both the public and the private sectors to implement target-oriented programmes for achieving further success in population control in a coordinated manner, reports BSS.

Steps should be taken to increase involvement of NGOs, ulema and social workers in national level birth control programmes side by side with government programmes.

The CA made this call while presiding over a meeting of the reorganised National Population Council at the Chief Adviser Office (CAO).

The slogan of the national population policy is "Not more than two children and one is better" The CA, who is the chairperson of the council, said cooperation and induction of other ministries with the Ministry of Health should be increased for successful implementation of the programmes of health, nutrition and population sectors.

Fakhruddin said supply of birth control materials should be ensured where the users demand existed. He said a coordinated approach was necessary to achieve population control through MDG.

Adjustment of manpower in health and population sectors should be done for successful implementation of various programmes.

The CA said supply of contraceptives should be ensured in remote areas like chars and haors and also in other regions of the country where rate of population growth was high.

The meeting discussed various issues including delayed marriage for birth control, imam training, supply of contraceptives among garment workers and tea garden labours, population distribution policy between urban and rural areas, holding of an international ulema conference regarding birth control, filling up vacant posts in health and population sectors and implementation of innovative ideas in population control.
