Public sector employees favour rationing system

Wednesday, 14 November 2007

FE Report
Many public officials and employees are favouring the supply of essential commodities through rations to absorb the high inflationary pressures mainly caused by increasing food item costs, sources said.
They have already pleaded to a committee formed under the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to incorporate the provision of introducing rationing system.
The committee, formed last September to prepare recommendations for adjusting inflationary pressures, received more than 250 such applications from government officials and employees, sources added.
The committee was instructed to prepare recommendations after the present caretaker administration took an initiative to compensate the high inflation through special financial benefits.
A member of the committee said the government is not in a position to offer major financial benefits due to fund constraints.
Even a benefit equivalent to 10 per cent of the basic pay of public servants would cost the government exchequer more than Tk 12.0 billion a year.
Some 8,28,000 civil servants, 1,40,000 defence staffs and 5,60,000 teachers on the Monthly Payment Order (MPO) will be benefited if the government finally decides to give any perks.
They were offered 53.33 per cent to 60 per cent salary hike in the last pay scale announced in 2005.
